That’s because these foods contain FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols), a family of hard-to-digest carbohydrates, are notorious gut symptom triggers (gas, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and constipation).
Individuals with conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are particularly sensitive to FODMAPs. The current clinical recommendation is to avoid foods with high FODMAP content: the low- FODMAP diet, leading to an absurdly restrictive lifestyle.
